ALYSSA PHEOBUS MUMTAZ

Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz is an American artist and educator whose recent work explores contemplative metaphors drawn from South Asian mysticism and devotional culture. Influenced by her evolving relationship with Pakistan and parallel travels in India, her intricately crafted artworks are meditative both in form and orientation.

She attended Yale University and completed her MFA at Columbia University’s School of the Arts in New York City. Her projects have been exhibited internationally, including solo presentations in Mumbai, New York, London and Palma, as well as curated group exhibitions at institutions including the University of Buffalo Art Galleries; Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs, New York; KMAC, Louisville; the Weatherspoon Art Museum; White Columns and the International Print Center, New York.

Her work has been supported by fellowships and research grants from the Kittredge Fund, the Lighton International Artist Exchange Program, the Mid Atlantic Art Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies, New York. She has taught widely in universities and art schools in both the US and Pakistan, including Lahore’s National College of Arts and Beaconhouse National University.

She is currently based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
